Summer is just around the corner and it’s time to start your well- deserved beach and sea vacation . This used to be a major dilemma for pet owners. What are we going to do with the dog? Fortunately, everything is always evolving and there are now a lot of “pet-friendly” holiday destinations where our cuddles are welcome.

What should you consider before you decide to take your dog to the beach?

If you are not one of the lucky few who live on the coast anyway and stroll along the beach promenade with your furry nose every day, then you will probably plan a more or less long trip with your pet. There are certain things that you should be aware of.

First and foremost, you need to make sure that your desired vacation destination allows pets on the beach. Find out from the accommodation of your choice whether your furry friend will be welcomed there.

Before you decide to take your dog with you on vacation, you should definitely pay a visit to the vet.  He should make sure that your dog is in optimal health and that it can go on this adventure without any problems.

Also ask your vet for advice on what to keep in mind while traveling or if something unexpected happens at the destination. Of course, your dog should be dewormed and vaccinated before it starts.

Once you have reached your destination and really feel like feeling the sand between your toes or paws and jumping into the sea, remember that you have to have the following things with you when you get yours Take your dog to the beach :

  • His papers.
  • Fresh, cool water and a drinking bowl.
  • Food and a bowl, especially if you want to spend the whole day on the beach.
  • Sun protection cream for the little pigmented, hair-free areas of your dog.
  • Paw protection in case he has sensitive paws. Remember that the sand heats up a lot, especially during lunchtime.
  • Treats you can give him if he’s behaving well. Your dog’s positive reinforcement should also come with you on vacation.

Think of a parasol too. Perhaps you want to sunbathe in the midday heat, but your dog certainly doesn’t.  He needs a shady place to rest and where he can protect me from excessive heat. Dogs can easily get heat stroke. This can put your health and even your life at risk.

Prevention is always better than cure. So make sure your dog is getting enough rest and avoiding the sun. Give him enough water to drink to cool him down. Under no circumstances should he drink sea water as it can cause gastrointestinal problems.

Both humans and dogs should avoid the great midday heat. Not only are the sun’s rays most intense there, but the temperatures climb the highest on the thermometer during these hours.
