There is a Spaniard who decided to leave his boring life behind and paddle the world in a kayak. On his way he found a street dog and made her his faithful travel companion. Get to know Nirvana, the sailor’s dog.

The story of the seaman’s bitch

Exhausted from the routine and the daily grind of his work, Sergi Basoli decided in 2013 to say goodbye to his previous life as an engineer in Barcelona  and instead to realize a dream that he had long delayed.

He had dreamed of going on a long kayak trip around the shores of the Mediterranean.  As with any adventure, Sergi’s journey came with unexpected events and surprises. However, he never expected any of these surprises to be his best travel companion.

All of this happened in the streets of Alghero, which is in Sicily. Here the courageous globetrotter got to know the bitch who would later become his most loyal and loyal travel companion.

The street dog Nirvana suffered from seasickness at first, but little by little she learned to enjoy the kayak rides.  She seemed like a real luxury passenger. Ultimately, she became a true sailor’s bitch .

Everything on one website

Thanks to technological advances and the Internet, Sergi was able to develop his own website, where he talks about the people and landscapes he gets to know on his travels.

One of this traveler’s tenets is not to pay for overnight stays.  He doesn’t do this so much to save, but sees it as a challenge to have different experiences.

Thanks to this way of thinking, he met many nice and hospitable people.

Sergi takes a lot of time for his travels so that he can continuously enjoy what he sees.  It stops in many places.

In order to generate a minimum income, the globetrotter and the sailor dog sell handmade products made from natural elements that they find on the beaches. This activity mostly takes place at night. When a new day begins … the adventure continues.

Sergi and Nirvana have chosen an easy, quiet way to travel so they can fully enjoy the tour. They travel about 4 hours a day and were 10 to 30 kilometers behind in that time. In winter the trips are different, shorter.

Three years and more than 5,000 kilometers of the Mediterranean coast later  , Sergi assures that he will continue to live his dream, of course in the company of Nirvana.

Since he was a kid, he dreamed of being Indiana Jones or a pirate. Today, at this stage of his life, Sergi enjoys most of what nature and the friendliness of the people he meets on his travels have to offer.

Pets on the boat

If we take our dogs or cats on a boat then we should avoid health problems.

If our four-paw friend gets very nervous and suffers from seasickness while traveling, then it is advisable to consult a veterinarian. He can prescribe medication for the animal so that it does not vomit and feel sick .

It is best if our pet travels in a transport box.  There it travels comfortably with its favorite toys and objects, things to nibble and chew, food balls or the like.

You shouldn’t give your dog anything to eat for a few hours before the trip.  However, he should drink enough. Therefore offer him fresh water before and during the boat trip. This is especially true on warm summer days.

The marking

We need to make sure our pet is well labeled and all sanitary and managerial responsibilities are up to date.  If the pet is lost but tagged, the chances of finding it are greatly increased.

The data on the microchip must be up to  date and contain a mobile phone number if possible so that you can be notified quickly.

The travel bag

Our dog’s travel bag should contain the following items:

  • His towel, a shampoo, a brush and a spray against parasites.
  • The collar and leash, as well as his muzzle. This is especially important when dealing with an animal that has been classified as “potentially dangerous” or if it is required in a location or mode of transport.
  • It is more convenient to take dry food with you on the trip. If we use canned food then we have to throw away leftovers, especially if we don’t have a refrigerator on the trip.
  • It is important to have a bottle of water with you on the trip to quench the thirst of our furry friend. It should never be too cold as this could cause serious stomach problems.
