Adopt Retired Police Dogs
Do you admire service dogs that are specially trained for the police, customs or the military to perform various tasks? Police dogs are released from service after a certain age . Many police officers who have worked with these dogs for a long time take them home, but not all of them are this lucky.
Many retired police dogs are waiting for a new family to spend their old age with. Today we introduce you to an association that tries to find adoptive families for police dogs.
Police dogs: heroes looking for a new home
The “Heroes de Cuatro Patas” association has launched a campaign in Madrid to encourage animal lovers to take retired police dogs into their homes. The president of the association, Cristina Cifuentes, assures that these wonderful service dogs have earned a nice place for their retirement.
During their active time, these dogs saved people, looked for drugs, fought terrorists or looked for survivors in disasters. These service dogs retire when they are around 10 years old. But there are not always enough families willing to take in an older dog. In most cases the police officers responsible take the dogs home themselves.
Since it was founded two years ago, the “Heroes de Cuatro Patas” association has managed to give a home to 100 retired police dogs. Every day they work hard to find families for the dogs. Even police officers who cannot have the dogs at home help out.
After their work is done, dogs need affection and care even in old age. You have done a great job and have earned a wonderful retirement!
Adoption of retired police dogs
This foundation works with the Guardia Civil and the Servicio Cinológico to find a home for those dogs that cannot be taken by the responsible police officers. As soon as these dogs’ exceptional abilities decline due to age, they will be retired. Sometimes younger animals are also put up for adoption who do not have the skills required to work as police dogs.
“Heroes de Cuatro Patas” is trying to create a national network to refer retired police dogs to families who care for them in old age. However, they have to be people who are caring, committed and know the needs of an adult dog: peace, warmth, a good bed and lots of love.
The adoption process is carried out carefully because the right person needs to get the right dog. The character of the animal and that of the possible dog owner are taken into account. After the adoption, experts are available for advice and supervision.
The association is available for all dog units, not just police dogs, regardless of which armed force or organization they belong to: security forces, civil protection, fire departments, private security, military, dog service companies, etc.
